Jedes Jahr im Januar findet in Auckland eine Regatta zum Gedenken and die Gründung von Auckland statt. Die Regatta ist prinzipiell für alle Klassen offen und so tummelt sich alles was Segel hat auf dem Wasser. Die Folge: ein buntes Meer von unteschiedlichtent Segeln und Rümpfen, vom Kriegsschiff und Grossegler bis zur Jolle.

Zum Abschluss unserer langen Neuseelandreise gönnte ich mir das Vergnügen auf einem America's Cup Klasse Schiff anzuheuern. Eine rasante dreistündige Fahrt trotz wenig Wind vom Viaduct Basin bis Rangitoto Island, Brown Island auf einem etwas abgetakelten 78 Fuss Trainingsschiff der America's Cup Klasse. Eine interessante Erfahrung, insbesondere das Heissen des Großsegels mit den sogenannten "Grindern" war mir neu. Wirklich erstaunlich war die Sensibilität des Schiffes auf Steuerausschläge.

At the end of our voyage to New Zealand I make myself a present and joined a sail cruise on NZL40, an off-duty America's Cup racer. We leave harbor and immediately set sails. Light winds at around 8kn are perfect conditions for an AC yacht.
