Sailing on Lake Neusiedl

Cruising towards Rust (Foto: Diana F.) A sunny day and so Mörbisch was a good choice for a combined bathing and sailing trip. Located at the southern end of Lake Neusiedl Mörbisch has a narrow access to the lake which leads through a broad strip of reed and ends at the public beach and yacht harbor. The local sailing school, where I obtained my sailing certificate many years ago, has been completely rebuilt. They replaced the old shack-like training center with a fresh looking wooden building. Also all peers have been completely rebuilt. I am quite happy that they are still in business and obviously have invested into the future of their school. I have extremely good memories with this school, both as a student and later when renting boats for various sailing trips.

sailing school we rented a 15 footer 15m2 keel dinghy, which is a locally crafted boat here - Boote Lang. With fresh northerly wind at about 15kn and the typical short waves of lake Neusiedl we cruised towards Rust and the little reed island east of it. After two legs we set the head sail and tacked towards Rust. After an hour or so we headed back to Mörbisch to take a swim. I had to repeat the landing maneuver as strong waves pushed me away from the peer before my sailing mate could step over.

Swim Festival was taking place with lots of cool water sports stuff to try out and special swimming competitions, e.g. a Muskel Charity Aquathlon where athletes swim for charity reasons.
