Bicycling on Mljet and unexpected strong wind in the afternoon

Thanks to our host two bicycles are prepared early in the morning. We ride southwards to the large lake (Veli Jezero) where a track leads us around the lake. The lake itself is beautiful. It is actually an inlet from sea but is separated from sea only by a narrow channel. On a small island at the southern shore of the lake a Benedictine monastery has been erected in the 12th century. It is the major attraction for tourists. I actually was more impressed by the rich flora there and a small fishermen settlement.
Cycling around the large lake on Mljet At midday we depart from Polace. Wind speed had increased meanwhile to 12kn. And while leave well sheltered Polace bay wind increases to 15kn. We set sails and head towards Korcula. Wind increases within next hour to 18kn. We reef sails as I have the feeling that there is more to come. However, wind is perfect for our trip to Korcula and gusts of 26kn are manageable.
Me at the helm Approaching Korcula, wind decreases and we had the chance to set our Gennaker. It was marvelous to rush downwind in front of Korcula and take some extra legs just for fun. With sunset we take in sails and moor our boat in Korcula marina.
Wolfgang sheeting the Gennaker In Korcula we took a shower and afterwards did a walk through the old town and harbor. Venetian symbols like the Lion are visible everywhere. The architecture with narrow streets and the church on the top of hill located on a small peninsula is so typical. However, Korcula is quite unique as it is surrounded by a massive stone wall and it is assumed to be the birth place of Marco Polo, one of the great explorers from 13th century.
